IU Day 2011

We promised you something huge, massive, mind-blowing, and what would be THE MOST AMAZING EVENT OF THE YEAR. I strongly feel, the Interact Club of WMS, after months of brainstorming and hard work, have achieved the ultimate goal of creating the Best IU day in WMS history. It all started on the 29th April 2011...

A monster burst into view, it was none other than the notorious, most-feared-of, terrible Loch Ness Monster, otherwise known as Nessie.

Nessie cornered a poor little girl. Just as we thought all hope was lost...

3 brave Scottish warriors saved the day and defeated the monster. And as you may have guessed, the theme of WMS International Understanding Day 2011 is the beautiful country of Scotland, We Scot' the Power!

After our emcees appeared in the most dramatic way, pur Guest of Honour, Mr. James Smith gave us a wonderful insight about Scotland, complete with facts and Scottish jokes, but he was not the only one who shared his knowledge about Scotland. Our Interact Club presented to you our very own Info Boy!

Later, a few of our Interactors showed our own version of how the Kilt came about and why people wear them. Humorous and witty... the sketch.

Then, we had the most anticipated dance. It told the story of how the Loch Ness Monster, Nessie, came about. And it successfully blew people's minds.

What's an IU day without the thoughts from the man behind the whole event. Our beloved IU director, Chan Jun Shern, gave us more than just a speech, he even performed a song for us. For without him, we could not have made this happen. Thanks to the assistant IU director as well, Brenda Yew :)

And to sum up what was a dessert to the lunch, we had the a performance from the St. John's bagpipe band, and all the Interactors paraded down the isle for the finale.

Thank you all the Interactors who made this event such a huge success and all those who attended and supported our event. We Scot' the Power!!

There is something big coming up. Something huge. Massive, to say the least.

Newsflash: The Interact Club of Wesley Methodist School are preparing to pull off one of the most amazing events ever seen.

Yes, folks. It is time now. Time for...

IU Day.

As you may have guessed from the picture above, this year's IU Day will be featuring the beautiful country of Scotland.

Why Scotland, you ask?

Well, Scotland is actually an IU Director's dream come true. You might not know very much about it now, but I assure you that there are many exciting sides to Scotland which most have simply never taken the time to appreciate.

I quote from the description on our Facebook event page,

Hilarious sketches. Breathtaking dances. Jaw-dropping presentations. Epic displays of talent. Castles. Bagpipes. Crytozoological monsters. Warriors in kilts. Unicorns. Awesomeness.

Those are some of the things we have in store for you on the 29th of April. Feeling excited? I'll list out the details before elaborating further:

Our Theme: We ‘Scot The Power!
Because yes. We has got the power, if you would excuse our lapse in grammatical correctness.

When? Friday, the 29th of April 2011, 3:00pm – 6:00pm.
Do note that while registration begins at 3:00pm, the event is due to begin at 3:40pm with no delays. The main event ends at 6:00pm, after which all guests are invited to the canteen for a taste of some scrumptious Scottish cuisine.

Where? School Hall of Wesley Methodist School, Sentul, Kuala Lumpur.
Our school is also easily accessible via public transport. Simply take the LRT to the Sentul station right next to the school, and there will be ushers to escort you into the school from there.

1. The event kicks off with a heart-pounding opening act which will leave you stunned. Pleasantly so, of course. Throughout the course of the event,
2. you will be surprised by sudden events which will present themselves without warning,
3. witness first-hand our own version of the story of how the Loch Ness Monster came about,
4. and through a dramatized sketch, you will learn the answer to an intriguing question, "Why do the Scots wear kilts?".
5. Of course, we are saving our best for the last, so make sure you don't leave early, or you might miss our epic finale which we are working so hard on.

For RM8 (or RM10, depending on your dress status on the day), I guarantee you the perfect experience of a 3-hour spectacle which will stun you and keep you at the edge of your seat. You will go home afterwards, but the experience will not end immediately. The things you witnessed at our IU Day will replay in your mind for at least a few days, and this is one event which you will not forget so easily.

I don't usually like to brag, but I can say this much. This year, IU Day will be one-(insert suitable powerful word which is not profane)-of an event.

We all know that the Scottish are famous for blowing their bagpipes, right?
Well, we WMS Interactors may not know how to blow bagpipes, but we do promise to blow your minds.

Cross Country 2011

Titiwangsa Park...

Yes, our Interact Club held the annual Cross Country for 2011 except this time instead of the usual Lake Gardens, we had it in Taman Tasik Titiwangsa. This year's theme is 'Compassion in Motion, running for their lives'.

The event was aimed at helping those in need as well as serving the underprivileged, to instill the spirit of charity and social consciousness among our students, and to promote the spirit of good sportsmanship as well as friendship among participants. Proceeds and funds were collected and directed entirely to charity. Around 1100 people including teachers, students, and parents participated in the race which was held on a Saturday morning from 6.30 a.m. to 12.oop.m. Every student was given a donation card each in order to collect donations with a minimum donation of RM 35.

We managed to get various sponsors for the event. Food and refreshments were catered by our school canteen operator who prepared fried banana fritters, curry puffs and “kuih gulung”. V-soy Soya bean milk, F&N, myNEWS.com, Revive, Gardenia, Lotte Mart, Sunway SDN BHD, Mc Donalds, Carrefour and Nestle, were among the major sponsors for the event.

The guests on the day of the event consisted of Dato’ Dr. Tan Kee Hwong, the Chairman of the Board of Directors for Wesley Methodist School, Datuk A.R Peter, the past principal of Wesley Methodist School, Mrs. Matthews the immediate past school principal, Madam Chia Loy Tian, the school principal, Madam Pearl Moses, the vice principal; teachers, parents and students.

After the event was declared open, some basic warming up exercises were conducted by the Presidents of the Interact Club Yeoh Kai Yuan and Eric Soo Wai Lik. There were two routes. The first route was only about 4.4km and was for the under 15 student category, teachers, and parents. The other route was about 6.6km for the Under 18 category and past students of Wesley Methodist School. As the space was limited, and each round around the lake was 2.2km, the former categories ran twice about the lake and the latter three times.

The run began with the Under 15 and then the Under 18 Girls, followed by the boys, teachers, parents and ex students. The entire route was covered by Interactors stationed at intervals along the route. Small arrowed signs were also placed to direct the students along the right route. Each student was to obtain a coloured band upon completing each round to ensure that no one cheated.

The prizes were presented by our past principals Datuk A.R Peter and Mrs Matthews. The prizes included 2 Lenova Screens, 2 Samsung mp3s, 4 Justin Bieber concert tickets, 2 Apple iPod Nano 8GB, 4 GB Thumbdrives, 5 Sunway theme park tickets, computer mouse, keyboards, water bottles, a HP Printer, Custom Made Pens, Addidas deodorant, Body Shop set, cups, and a diary. The highest donor for the event was awarded a brand new computer screen and the other top donors with individual hampers. The highest supporting classes of each form on the other hand were also rewarded with hampers each.

Visit to the Soup Kitchen

On an early Saturday morning, at around 9.00 am 33 Form 5 Interactors set off to a Soup Kitchen in Jinjang. This visit is the WMS Interact Club's first community service trip for the year 2011. This is something new for all of us because none of us had been to a soup kitchen before.

We arrived at around 10.30 am. There we were split into groups to prepare the food and get the place set up.

There was the cutting of the onions, bags and bags of onions, which made every one doing that tear. Those who walked pass the area even for a moment left with teary eyes. :) Some others were chopping up the garlic, stirring and literally digging the rice out from a HUGE rice cooker to place into the container.

Oh, there were even Interactors who helped with the traffic...

and looking after the bicycles, making sure none are stolen.

Then at 11.00 am, we were all ready and people were anxiously waiting outside the building. Soon, they were all swarming in, and Interactors were there serving the food and interacting with them. Most of those who came were senior citizens, a few of the young ones too. These people actually come here as they cannot afford their meals. Some of them come just for the environment, where people are friendly and the atmosphere is lively.

People kept spilling in until around 1.30pm, after which the Interactors themselves took a break for lunch and talked with some of the folks there. Most of them could only speak mandarin and Cantonese or Hakka. Some of us had some trouble with communication, but we learnt a few words, and they were quite willing to tell us their life stories. Smiles were on their faces when they left.

Then of course, we stayed to clean up. Around 2.30pm, we left the place, bringing back with us an unforgettable experience and indescribable joy.
