30-Hour Famine

In collaboration with World Vision Malaysia, the Interact Club of Wesley Methodist School Kuala Lumpur (International) was given the permission to organise an external 30-Hour Famine on our own. This year's 30-Hour Famine was held from the 8th to the 9th of July with at our own school grounds. The main purpose of 30-Hour Famine is to raise awareness on hunger in other countries. This camp is to let the participants experience hunger that we often take for granted. A donation booklet was handed way before the event to let the participants collect donations, all proceeds with go to World Vision Malaysia.

The event started off at 8.30am with a short opening ceremony where a representative from World Vision Malaysia to present a speech regarding hunger and the need for famine. He openly shared his experience on his mission in Vietnam where he volunteered to help and serve the people there.

At 9.ooam, a short ice breaking session was held in order for the participants to break the ice. ‘Blow wind blow’ was a classic favourite amongst the students and every round, the losers would have to carry out a punishment. After the groups of students and facis were formed, they were given time to come up with a war cry and to present their flag.

After that, ‘Famine Challenge’ was held where the students were required to play games related to famine. At 4.00pm the participants were given a short break to wash up and to rest before the next activity which was going to start at 7pm.

The next activity was the long anticipated “Mystery Night’, the participants were gathered in the hall for a short briefing on the story plot before being allowed to roam the school in order to find clues to solve the mystery of the game. The game ended at 1030 and the participants were allowed to wash up before lights out which was at 12am.

Morning exercise was held at 7am the next morning where the participants had to perform simple warm-ups and exercises. Next on the agenda was the station games which started at 9am and went on until 12pm. The participants were then allowed to pack up their stuff before proceeding to the hall for a movie.

At 2.30, the participants were required to gather at the canteen for the prize giving ceremony where the placing for the groups were announced. A few participants were asked to share their experience that they gained throughout this camp. At 3 pm sharp, the participants were finally allowed to eat and the whole canteen was full with joy as they had successfully completed the 30-Hour Famine Challenge.

30-Hour Famine 2016

This year's 30-Hour Famine was held from the 21st to the 22nd of May with the theme "Hunger Must Go" at our own school grounds. 110 participants along with 31 facilitators and 5 teacher advisors were in this camp. The main purpose of 30-Hour Famine is to raise awareness on hunger in other countries. This camp is to let the participants experience hunger that we often take for granted. A donation booklet was handed way before the event to let the participants collect donations, all proceeds with go to World Vision Malaysia.

The camp and countdown kicked started at 8:30am. Our guest of honour President Elect of the Rotary Club KL Diraja Dr. Hardeep Singh gave his speech as an opening. Then we had the opportunity to have the youth mobiliser of World Vision Malaysia, Shi Ning to give a short speech and presentation of what hunger and famine was all about. She also shared about her experience on a mission trip to China where she got to experience and see what people who lived in poverty and hunger were like. Then, our Vice Principal Mr. Nathan gave his speech, followed by the organising chairperson, Int. Han Chun Ting.

As 30-Hour Famine camp was a yearly affair, it was greatly anticipated by the participants. Participants wanted a fun-filled camp where they wouldn't even think about hunger, and I guess this camp succeeded. The committee and facilitators worked tirelessly to ensure the fun of this camp. With exams and holidays in the way, they still managed to work this camp. Ice breakers, educational games and station games were amongst the fun activities that were carried out throughout the 30 hours. These activities challenged the participants' mental and physical strength and capacity. So participants were like "meh", but some really couldn't take it. Every single game designed has been approved by World Vision Malaysia and was aimed to bring focus to this year's famine goal (raising awareness on the importance of hospitality for the poor and needy).

The next morning, games continued until 2:30pm where we broke fast. This was the official closing of the camp. Some participants were so hungry to the point where they chomped down everything, but some were more chill and took in everything slowly. Regardless, this camp managed to convey the message about real-world issues of poverty and injustice in many third-world countries. Issues as such should not be looked upon lightly because everyone has the right to get enough food and nutrition. This event was simply just a start to opening up the hearts of those who are truly willing to help. Aside from that, participants also bonded with one another as they had to overcome challenges with their teammates.

We would like to thank World Vision Malaysia, the Famine 2016 committee as well as the facilitators for putting up such a fun-tastic camp! As hungry and tired as we were, it was satisfying to know that we all starved for a good cause. We hope that this camp ignited a flame in your heart to help those living in poverty and hunger because "Hunger Must Go".

30 Hour Famine 2015 - "Hungry for Change"

30-Hour Famine is a no food only water camp which gives campers a first-hand experience to the struggles faced by the less fortunate in the world we live in. By joining the camp, all proceeds from donations would be forwarded to World Vision Malaysia, which is an Evangelical Christian humanitarian aid, development, and advocacy organisation.

The event kicked off at 9am, which is the official time for fasting to begin. The opening ceremony was chaired by Guest of Honour President of Rotary Club DiRaja, Rotarian Hardeep Singh, Mr Isaac Ng, a representative of World Vision Malaysia and Mr Jeyagobi, Assistant Vice-Principal of Wesley Methodist School Kuala Lumpur. The event was officiated by Mr Isaac Ng followed by a brief introduction to 30-Hour Famine.

After the introduction to 30-Hour Famine, a group shot was taken with all the participants of the camp.

Following the group short, the ice breaking session was held. The first game was to try and put the body parts announced by the facilitators on a big piece of newspaper. Following that game, we had to get to know more people by writing answers to questions asked by the facilitators on other participants. Next, it was announced that the groups were determined not by the color of the ribbons given to the participants but instead the length of the ribbons. After being put into groups, the participants played games to get to know  and bond with their groups. Later at night, mystery game was also held until lights out. Mystery night this year transitioned from a party environment in which the participants could take part in, to a murder scene where a person from the party is killed and the participants have to solve the murder.

The second day of the camp was started off with morning exercise at 7 in the morning. After morning exercise, there was an obstacle course followed by a 30 minute break and station games after. From 1.15pm - 2.30pm the participants watched a movie and at 2.30pm, the participants headed downstairs to take the group picture. Finally, at 3pm we broke fast.

More than 100 students from Wesley Methodist School Kuala Lumpur ranging from Form 2 to Form 5 starved together for 30 hours on the 5th and 6th of July. With the theme "Kick Out Hunger", our hunger warriors steeled their tummies for 30 hours for the greater good of others.

The event kicked off at 905am, where it is the official time for the fasting to begin. We had our opening 

opening ceremony  at 9:30 a.m., chaired by Guest of Honour President Elect of the Rotary Club 

KL DiRaja Dr. Hardeep Singh, Rotarian Wan Rasul, as well as Ms. Rachelle Gan, a representative of 

World Vision Malaysia. The event was officiated by Dr. Hardeep Singh, followed by a brief 

introduction to 30-Hour Famine by Ms. Rachelle Gan. 

The ice breaking session includes three games, which are the "Blanket Game", the "Alarm Talk" and "Find Your Family" .We then quickly proceeded to our first Famine Challenge, which requires a few of the group members to be "handicapped". Participants went through a tiring yet fun session of games and had a great time completing Famine Challenge I.

Famine Challenge II is less physical and more mental where each group is given a country to be discussed, and at the end of the session, a sketch is presented by each group to show the others the product of their discussion.

Mystery game was hectic and spine-chilling, nevertheless the participants managed to survive through the eerie night and headed back to their dorms for good night's rest.

The next day, we had Famine Challenge III and IV, allowing participants to understand how it feels living in poverty. The "Capture the Flag" event was exciting and managed to get everyone hyped up to defend their own bases . We also had a war cry chanting session, where the participants chanted with their hearts out to achieve the most energetic war-cry award.

Our final activity was station games, and the participants had to spend their last resource of energy and complete all 8 stations before getting ready to have their break fast. Station games went on splendidly and the facilitators had a good time "torturing" the participants during their final hour of fasting.

At 3.05pm, the hour has arrived where the participants gratefully wolfed down the light yet hearty meal we prepared for them along with a chilled cup of Milo. The event was a huge success and we are happy that we managed to raise donations AND awareness regarding poverty in the third-world countries. The sum collected is around RM13,500.00 and all proceeds of this event will be donated to World Vision Malaysia to help eliminate poverty. We thank all of you for the continuous support towards our club and hope to see you next time.
